Enter your Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) total to see where it falls: 0–7 means no clinically significant insomnia, 8–14 subthreshold, 15–21 moderate and 22–28 severe clinical insomnia. Add an earlier score to see whether the change is meaningful.

You need your ISI total from your clinician or sleep program. No score? Take the Sleep Condition Indicator; either completes the sleep quality step of your Sleep Check-up.
The ISI has seven items about insomnia over the past two weeks — falling asleep, staying asleep, waking too early, satisfaction, how noticeable it is, worry, and daily impact — each rated 0 to 4. Clinics use it to measure severity and track treatment.
This page explains the total you already have; it does not reproduce the licensed ISI or diagnose insomnia.
| ISI total | Band |
|---|---|
| 0–7 | No clinically significant insomnia |
| 8–14 | Subthreshold insomnia |
| 15–21 | Clinical insomnia (moderate) |
| 22–28 | Clinical insomnia (severe) |
Two reference points from Morin and colleagues (Sleep, 2011) appear on the result: a cutoff of 10 for detecting insomnia in community samples, and a drop of about 8 points as meaningful improvement.
0–7. No clinically significant insomnia.
8–14. Below the clinical range; from 10 up, worth mentioning.
15–21. Moderate clinical insomnia. Ask about CBT-I.
22–28. Severe clinical insomnia. Talk to your clinician soon.
Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea often occur together (COMISA), and lying awake with a mask on makes CPAP harder to keep up. The American College of Physicians recommends cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as the first treatment for chronic insomnia in adults, and a randomised trial in people with COMISA found that CBT-I before CPAP helped them use CPAP more.
In Apnealytics, usage hours show short nights, the trigger journal records context, and the compliance calculator shows whether insomnia puts your insurance usage target at risk. Save your ISI monthly and watch it alongside usage.
A total of 0 to 7 means no clinically significant insomnia. Scores of 8 to 14 are subthreshold, 15 to 21 moderate and 22 to 28 severe clinical insomnia. In community samples, a cutoff of 10 was found to detect insomnia well, so scores from 10 up are worth mentioning to a clinician.
In research by Morin and colleagues, a drop of about 8 points marked a meaningful improvement, and a score under 8 marked remission. Progress is rarely a straight line, so saving your score monthly shows the overall direction rather than one good or bad week.
Ask your clinician, sleep program or CBT-I provider; it is widely used. The ISI is copyrighted by Dr Charles Morin and licensed through Mapi Research Trust, so we do not reproduce it here. If you don't have a score, the Sleep Condition Indicator screens for insomnia too.
Yes. Time awake in bed with a mask on can feel long, and some people take the mask off and don't put it back on. Insomnia with sleep apnea, called COMISA, is common, and treating the insomnia, often with CBT-I, can help.
No, but they answer a similar question. The ISI has seven items, higher is worse, and gives severity bands. The SCI has eight items, higher is better, and uses one cutoff for probable insomnia disorder. Either one completes the sleep quality step of your Sleep Check-up.
Apnealytics reads your machine's SD card and shows residual AHI, leak and usage every night. Your first 30 nights are free.

Screening tool, not a diagnosis. A result here cannot tell you whether you have sleep apnea, insomnia or any other condition — only a licensed clinician can diagnose. If you are very sleepy during the day or have dozed while driving, see a doctor promptly.
