The best CPAP mask for side sleepers

There is no single best mask, but side sleepers have a clear pattern. A low-profile mask with a hose that leaves from the top of your head moves least against a pillow. The right style then depends on how you breathe and whether you have a beard, so this guide is split by those cases.

01

What side sleeping does to a mask

When you lie on your side, the pillow pushes the mask sideways and the hose drags it as you turn over. That breaks the seal and shows up as short leak spikes when you change position. A good side-sleeper mask has little bulk, a flexible or top-mounted hose and a cushion that tolerates a little movement.

For example, the Mask Finder's pillows result lists models such as the ResMed AirFit P10 and P30i and the Fisher & Paykel Brevida, and the nasal result lists the ResMed AirFit N30i and Philips DreamWear Nasal. See the pages for nasal pillows and full-face masks.

02

If you breathe through your mouth

A mouth that falls open lets pressure escape through your lips on a nasal mask. A full-face mask avoids that route, and many side sleepers do best with a low-profile full-face design. Some people keep nasal pillows or a nasal mask and add a chin strap; discuss that with your clinician or supplier first. Our guide to mask leaking fixes shows how a mouth leak looks in your leak graph.

03

If you have a beard

Facial hair makes it hard for any cushion that sits on the skin around the mouth to seal, so full-face masks are usually the hardest with a beard. Nasal pillows avoid that area entirely, which is why they are the usual starting point. Trimming a moustache or the beard around the cushion edge sometimes helps a nasal or full-face mask seal.

04

Make a side-sleeping setup work

  • Manage the hose. Run it over the headboard or use a hose holder so it follows you when you roll.

  • Try a CPAP pillow. Pillows with cut-outs leave room for the mask instead of pushing it.

  • Fit lying down, in your sleep position, with the machine running.

  • Do not overtighten. Over-tightening folds the cushion and opens gaps.

Use your data to choose

Wear a new mask for a week or two, then compare leak P95, leak spikes and the seal score with your old mask. In Apnealytics, Mask Analytics compares seal, AHI and usage for each mask you have worn. FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the best CPAP mask for side sleepers?

Nasal pillows are the usual first try because they have the smallest footprint. If you breathe through your mouth, a low-profile full-face mask is often the better choice.

What is the best CPAP mask for side sleepers who breathe through their mouth?

A full-face mask, ideally a low-profile one with a top-mounted hose. Some people use a nasal mask with a chin strap after discussing it with their clinician.

What is the best CPAP mask for side sleepers with a beard?

Nasal pillows, because they avoid the skin around the mouth. A full-face mask can work with a trimmed beard, but leaks are more common.

Why does my mask leak when I roll over?

The pillow and hose pull it out of position. Manage the hose, try a pillow made for CPAP users and consider a lower-profile mask.

Can I change masks on my own?

You can try a different mask with your supplier's help, but pressure settings stay a clinician's decision.
